Review:

The horrors of the Civil War are brought to the screen by director John Frankenheimer, in this account of the most infamous of all POW camps.  As Union soldiers arrive at this barracks-less stockade in Georgia, they quickly learn that survival in this hell-hole will be tougher than fighting the war.

No shelter, little food and brutal guards, along with a gang of Union thieves who call themselves, "Raiders," make day to day living almost unbearable for the prisoners.

The camp's commandant, a German named Wertz, was later tried for war crimes after the conflict ended.  Although officially designated as "Camp Sumter," its atrocious treatment of men would forever label it "Andersonville."
